It thoroughly drives me up the wall when I hear people refer to hockey players and the general sport of hockey as the most "homophobic and least accepting sport that has ever existed", and trust me, this is something that can be heard around the hockey community a lot. And that’s why this video - why the "You Can Play" campaign - is so important.
It shows that even these huge, buff brutes who are seen as madmen only interested in slamming people against fibreglass and chasing after a small rubber puck while knocking each other off their skates while playing a sport that is one of the toughest - if not the toughest - sport known to man, have the ability to accept LGBT people into their sport. They have the ability to be accepting and even in hockey - even in such a utterly "heterosexual" sport - there are people willing to fight for LGBT rights.
So don’t be an ignorant little prick by automatically assuming that hockey players are homophobic twats just because they enjoy an intense, rough game like hockey. Even hockey players can be as accepting as anyone, because to many of them, a person’s sexuality means fuck all.
If you can play, you can play.
